We did it!
On July 31st the Victorian Homelessness Network displayed 6,000 origami houses on the steps of Parliament House (representing 10% of the 60,000 social homes needed in Victoria), to highlight the urgent need for Governments to fix the housing crisis and end homelessness. Community members across the state were also challenged to fold 60,000 origami houses by the end of Homelessness Week...and they exceeded that goal! Congratulations to all those involved.

The day was a great success thanks to everyone involved. Special thanks to the VHN organising committee for coordinating this incredible spectacle and all the local working groups for constructing and assembling the display on the day. We'd also like to thank

  • Colin Hunter Jnr Jnr for welcoming us to Country

  • Jason Russell who kindly shared his experience of being homelessness and the importance of secure housing

  • The incredible Vossanova Choir for lending us their voice

  • Deborah Di Natale, CEO of Council to Homeless Persons for speaking on the day

  • Victorian Housing Minister, Harriet Shing, who spoke at the event confirming that the 6,000 paper houses represent 10% of the 60,000 houses needed and that the voices of people with lived experience of homelessness needs to be elevated. (Click here to listen)

  • And the Members of Parliament that attended the event during their lunch break to speak with representatives of the homelessness services across Victoria.

  • Juelz and Ben for lending us their wonderful design skills

  • Josie De Sousa-Reay from Kine Graffiti, and Jess Middleton – who have given so much of their time to film this campaign

Thank you to every person who helped fold every single house! We were truly heartened by how many people got behind this campaign. The Statewide tally is still growing and has exceeded the 60,000! This far exceeds what we had hoped for. Keep the momentum going through homelessness week and remember to post your photos to socials (or you can use our digital assets)
